Shopify Alt Text Guide: Add Alt Text to Product Images

Alt text for product images is essential for SEO, accessibility, and giving your customers confidence in what they're buying. This guide shows you exactly where to add alt text in Shopify and how to manage it at scale.

Why Alt Text Matters on Shopify

Good alt text:

  • Improves SEO: Google indexes alt text, helping your products rank for image searches.
  • Helps customers with visual impairments: They can understand your product without seeing the image.
  • Shows when images don't load: Alt text displays as a fallback, reassuring customers.
  • Boosts trust and accessibility: Signaling that you care about all customers.

Where to Add Alt Text in Shopify

Single Product Image (Graphical Method)

  1. Go to Products in your Shopify admin.
  2. Click the product you want to edit.
  3. Scroll to the Media section.
  4. Click on an image, then click Edit media.
  5. Fill in the Alt text field. This is the field labeled "Alt text" in the media editor.
  6. Click Save.
Shopify UI Note: If you don't see an "Alt text" field, make sure you're editing the image properties, not the product description. The alt text field is in the media editor, not the main product form.

Multiple Images (Bulk via CSV Import)

For e-commerce stores with hundreds of products, adding alt text one at a time is slow. Shopify supports bulk edits via CSV import. Here's how:

Step 1: Export Your Products

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Click the filter or menu icon and select Export.
  3. Choose Export as CSV.
  4. Select "All products" or filter by collection/tag.
  5. Choose to export "Current view" or "All products in this view".
  6. Click Export products. The CSV will download.

Step 2: Prepare Your CSV

Open the CSV in a spreadsheet program (Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice). Look for:

  • Variant Image URL: The image URL for each variant.
  • Image Alt Text: This is the column where you'll add your alt text.

If the "Image Alt Text" column doesn't exist, create it with that exact heading.

Step 3: Fill In Alt Text

For each image, write descriptive alt text in the "Image Alt Text" column. Examples:

  • Product: "Blue ceramic coffee mug with smooth finish, front view"
  • Variant: "Navy wool blazer, size medium, worn view"
  • Detail shot: "Stitched seams and interior label of the blazer"

Write alt text that:

  • Describes the product clearly (what is it?)
  • Mentions key attributes (color, size, material)
  • Adds the perspective if there are multiple angles (front, back, detail)
  • Avoids redundant words like "photo of" or "image of"
  • Stays under 125 characters when possible
AI-Generated Drafts: Use Neartool to generate a draft alt text for each image, then refine it for product-specific details (color, material, size, angle). The AI gives you a starting point; your review makes it better.

Step 4: Import the Updated CSV

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Click the filter or menu icon and select Import.
  3. Choose your updated CSV file.
  4. Shopify will show a preview. Check that the "Image Alt Text" column is recognized.
  5. Click Import. Shopify will update the alt text for all matching images.

The import process takes a few minutes for large stores. You'll receive an email when it's done.

Naming & Keyword Guidelines

Be Descriptive, Not Spammy

Good: "Organic cotton blue t-shirt, front view"

Not as good: "blue t-shirt cotton tshirt men's shirt"

Avoid:

  • Keyword stuffing ("tshirt tshirt tshirt men's shirts cheap")
  • Repeating the product name verbatim
  • Generic terms ("product image" or "photo")

Natural Keywords

Include relevant terms naturally—the way a real person would describe the product:

  • Product category (coffee mug, blazer, chair)
  • Key attributes (color, material, size, style)
  • Angle or view (front, back, detail, lifestyle)

Example for a coffee mug store: "Handmade ceramic coffee mug with glaze detail, 12 oz capacity"

Multiple Angles & Images

If a product has multiple images (front, back, detail), vary the alt text:

  • Image 1: "Blue ceramic coffee mug, front view"
  • Image 2: "Blue ceramic coffee mug, detail of handle and glaze"
  • Image 3: "Blue ceramic coffee mug with coffee, lifestyle shot"

This helps both accessibility (customers know which view they're seeing) and SEO (varied keywords).

Quality Checklist

Before publishing, review your alt text:

  • Clarity: Does it describe what's in the image? Would someone blind to images understand the product?
  • Length: Is it concise? (Aim for 1–2 sentences, under 125 characters.)
  • No redundancy: Does it repeat the product title or description already on the page?
  • Specifics: Does it mention key attributes like color, material, or angle?
  • No keyword stuffing: Does it read naturally, or does it feel like a list of words?
  • Consistency: Do all images in the product have consistent, complete alt text?

Troubleshooting

Issue: Alt text isn't showing after import

Solution: Check that:

  • The CSV column is labeled exactly "Image Alt Text" (capital letters matter in some cases).
  • The image URL in your CSV matches the actual product images in Shopify.
  • You imported the file as a product update, not a new product creation.

Issue: Some images are missing from the export

Solution: Shopify exports only published products by default. If you have draft or archived products, they won't appear in the export. You'll need to add alt text to those manually or publish them first.

Issue: Bulk import is too slow for my store

Solution: Break your CSV into smaller chunks (e.g., 500 products per import) to speed up processing. Or consider using Shopify Apps specifically for alt text management.

SEO & Accessibility Tips

For Search Rankings

  • Include your main product keywords naturally in the alt text.
  • Vary alt text across images (don't use the same text for every variant).
  • Use rich, specific descriptions—"navy wool blazer with satin lining" ranks better than "blazer."

For Accessibility

  • Assume the user cannot see the image. Would your alt text alone help them decide to buy?
  • Mention unique selling points (e.g., "handmade," "organic," "limited edition").
  • For lifestyle or model photos, describe what the user is seeing (e.g., "model wearing navy blazer with white shirt").

Measuring Impact

After adding alt text, monitor:

  • Google Search Console: Track image search impressions and clicks over time.
  • Shopify analytics: Look for trends in traffic and conversions from image-heavy pages.
  • Accessibility audits: Use a tool like Axe or WAVE to verify alt text is present and meaningful.
Ongoing Maintenance: When you add new products, make alt text part of your product-upload workflow. Set a reminder to review and improve alt text quarterly.

Summary: Your Action Plan

  1. Start with your top sellers. Add alt text to your 10–20 best-performing products first.
  2. Use the CSV import for scale. Export, add alt text, import back.
  3. Write clear, concise descriptions. Describe what's visible; include color, material, and angle.
  4. Avoid keyword stuffing. Write for humans, not bots.
  5. Review and refine quarterly. Update alt text as products, seasons, or categories change.
  6. Test with accessibility tools. Ensure alt text is present and useful.
